Southern Utah University conducted a fire drill in the Geoscience Building on Monday, Nov. 25, 2024, as part of its efforts to ensure campus safety. Organized by the Emergency Management team, the drill aimed to test emergency response and evacuation procedures and build awareness about the importance of preparedness.
The fire alarm sounded at 10:00 a.m., initiating a mock evacuation of the Geoscience Building. The Emergency Management team evaluated everything from how quickly the building was evacuated to how well individuals followed the posted guidelines. Each step in this process helps to assess the overall readiness of SUU’s emergency safety.
“Preparedness is not just a requirement, it’s a responsibility,” said Tiger Funk, SUU’s executive director of Facilities Management. “These drills give us the opportunity to test our systems in real-time, evaluate their effectiveness, and ensure our community is ready to act in case of an actual emergency.”
In addition to conducting drills, SUU invests in training its Emergency Management team and educating the campus community. “It takes everyone: students, faculty, and staff working together and staying informed about what to do in different emergency scenarios,” said Funk. “Awareness and preparation are our best tools for reducing risk,”
The university’s comprehensive emergency procedures are readily available to all students and faculty. Everyone at the university is encouraged to familiarize themselves with these resources, regardless of their participation in any specific drills.
“Safety is a shared responsibility,” Funk said. “Together, we can ensure SUU remains a place where everyone feels secure and supported.”
SUU remains committed to the safety and well-being of its Thunderbirds by actively preparing for unforeseen challenges. The university prioritizes a secure learning environment by conducting regular emergency drills and engaging the campus community in safety initiatives.
