International student enrollment at Southern Utah University (SUU) has risen from 832 students in fall 2023 to 1,010 in fall 2024. This growth in international enrollment reflects SUU’s accelerated pace of growth as a whole and exceeds that of many similar-sized schools in the region.
SUU’s international students represent 93 countries from all areas of the world. In recent years, SUU has particularly seen a large increase in the number of students from Southeast Asia, Europe, Africa, and Latin America.
“For many years, we have made intentional efforts to diversify our international student enrollment,” said Associate Vice President for International Affairs, Stephen Allen. “We focus on multiple parts of the world to increase stability in our global enrollment. As a result, we have a record number of countries and territories represented at SUU.”
SUU international affairs staff credit their success to their ability to implement strategies and tactics in digital marketing, travel to various markets, and work with partners around the world to let students know about the benefits of attending SUU. These efforts continue to pay off in ways not often seen by larger educational institutions.
“Students and families are attracted to SUU for a variety of reasons,” said Vice President Allen. “Parents want to send their children to a place where they know their children will be safe and Cedar City and SUU have a low crime rate. Our proximity to various desirable locations and attractions is also something students find appealing. Additionally, SUU offers high-quality programs at an affordable price. We often hear from students and parents about how happy they are with the attention and service provided to all students at SUU.”
The continually growing international population at SUU has done much to put SUU on the map both domestically and internationally. Additionally, international students benefit Cedar City and Iron County in significant social, cultural, and economic ways.
“Growth always has an impact on our community,” said Vice President Allen. “There are many examples of deep friendships built as a result of our homestay program. International students also impact the local economy. It is estimated that international students at SUU inject $23.1 million into our local economy each year.”
In the coming years, as SUU’s enrollment continues to grow, international student enrollment is also anticipated to grow at an exponential rate. The University seeks to create an ever-welcoming environment for students of all backgrounds, both foreign and domestic, and looks forward to welcoming an increasing number of students from around the world in future years.
