CEDAR CITY, Utah –
The Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games, an outreach department of Southern Utah University, has announced an exciting partnership with the Intermountain Interclub Association to bring competitive figure skating to the 2025 Utah Summer Games programming. The collaboration will result in the hosting of the High-Altitude Challenge: A Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games Event, from February 20-22, 2025 at the Olympic Oval in West Valley City, Utah.
This regional event will provide figure skaters from Utah and the Intermountain West with the opportunity to qualify for the State Games of America, a national, Olympic-style festival that features U.S. Figure Skating's national amateur championship. As the official rights holder of Utah's state games through the National Congress of State Games, the Utah Summer Games will sanction this event, granting athletes of all ages and abilities the chance to qualify to compete on the national stage.
"We are ecstatic to partner with Intermountain Figure Skating Clubs to provide both Utah athletes and those from around the Intermountain West the opportunity to qualify for the State Games of America through this partnership," said Jon Oglesby, Executive Director of the Utah Summer Games. "Additionally, we are excited to collaborate with other Utah sports organizations to expand the reach of our state's athletes through our programming. The hope is this partnership will lead to additional figure skating events throughout the state, including some based in southern Utah."
"We are thrilled to provide this incredible opportunity for skaters of all levels to showcase their hard work and dedication," said Michelle Thomson, Competitions and Events Director for Salt Lake Figure Skating. "This event is not only a celebration of their passion for figure skating but also a pathway for every skater to dream big, compete at the national level, and qualify for the State Games of America. It's an exciting chance for Utah athletes to take their skills to new heights and represent our community on a national stage."
Registration for the High-Altitude Challenge is now open. Participants can register through the US Figure Skating EMS portal at USFigureSkating.org.
Utah has a growing reputation for producing top-level figure skaters, and the figure skating clubs at the Intermountain Interclub Association play a pivotal role in the development and promotion of the sport.
