Kimberly Winward has been announced as the valedictorian for Southern Utah University's Class of 2025. Originally from Orem, Utah, Winward is graduating with a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies, emphasizing psychology and exercise science, and a minor in Spanish. Her exceptional academic performance and dedication to learning have earned Winward this prestigious honor.
“When I walked into Provost Mendini’s office, I had no idea I was about to be named valedictorian,” said Winward. “I was completely shocked. It felt like a dream, and I still sometimes wonder if they made a mistake. But when I realize it’s real, I feel so grateful for all the hard work that led to this moment.”
During her time at SUU, Winward has been an active member of the Honors Program, where she completed 21 honors credits and a capstone project. Her project, titled “Stigma, Attitudes, and Awareness of Mental Health Services for College Student-Athletes,” focused on reducing the stigma surrounding mental health in athletics. She presented her research at the National Collegiate Honors Conference in Kansas City during the Fall 2024 semester.
“I’ve always been passionate about sports, and through my research, I saw an opportunity to make a difference,” said Winward. “Athletes should feel comfortable seeking mental health support, and I want to help change the culture around that.”
In addition to excelling academically, Winward was a student-athlete and a dedicated member of the track team. Balancing coursework, research, and athletics was a challenge, but she credits her success to meticulous time management, her faith, and the support of loved ones.
Throughout her journey, Winward was deeply influenced by several SUU professors, including Psychology Director, Michael Steele; Professor of Psychology, Patrick McFadden; Director of the Honors Program, Katie Englert; Professor of Physical Education, Paul Maggio; Professor of Kinesiology, Marcus Lawrence; and Professor of History, Dave Lunt. She also found invaluable support from her older sister, who helped her navigate her degree and served as an inspiration by earning a master’s degree from SUU.
“I have been so fortunate to have professors who truly care,” said Winward. “They are passionate about what they teach and about helping students reach their potential. My sister was also a huge influence—she comforted me when I was homesick and helped me find my path.”
Winward plans to pursue a master’s degree in Sports Conditioning and Performance at SUU. Her goal is to become a high school sports coach, using her background in psychology and exercise science to support student-athletes both physically and mentally.
“Take charge of your education. You can go through the motions, or you can choose to learn with passion. Decide to become a better person through your education, not just earn a degree,” said Winward.
Southern Utah University's Commencement Ceremony will be held on Thursday, April 24, 2025, at 7 p.m. in the America First Event Center. Individual College Degree Convocation Ceremonies will be held the following day, Friday, April 25, 2025. Visit SUU's graduation website for a full schedule of events.
