Program Benefits

Utah Health Scholars students are provided with certain program benefits as members.  The below activities are created specifically to enhance students' applications into a healthcare education program.  They are offered at various times during a student's academic career, depending on timeline and future goals.

Healthcare Exploration Seminars

  • Designed to introduce students to various healthcare careers
  • Seminars include the history of medicine, medical Spanish, dental practicum, rural health issues, test preparation, and discipline-specific topics

Enhanced Academic Advising

  • Undergraduate Peer Mentors assist in scheduling student pre-requisite courses for graduate school
  • Student and professional staff assist in activities to improve an application, including service, job shadowing, patient exposure, leadership, and undergraduate research. 
  • Detailed discussion of student timeline to applying to a graduate program

Test Preparation

  • Seminar courses specific to content covered on entrance exams, such as verbal reasoning/reading comprehension and behavioral sciences
  • Free practice exams offered in a structured environment
  • Discount program with  Kaplan Test Preparation Products
  • Includes assistance with the MCAT, GRE, DAT, OAT, or PCAT

Job Shadowing/Internships

  • Connections with local healthcare providers for pre-health students
  • Internship opportunities in local pharmacies, dental offices, and clinics 
  • Partnerships with Intermountain Healthcare for training and job shadowing
  • Virtual Job Shadowing

CPR & First Aid Classes

Leadership Opportunities

Undergraduate Research

  • Assistance in finding undergraduate research, which is required for most graduate healthcare programs
  • Information on faculty-led projects, off-campus research, and some supervision for in-house research projects

Lending Library

  • Free healthcare-related reading materials
  • Test preparation materials and text books for science courses
  • Can save students hundreds of dollars when preparing for an entrance exam 

Community Service

  • Intentional service learning opportunities for students
  • Online service database of local, reputable organizations

Cultural Immersion Experiences

Application Workshop

  • Summer program to assist students in applying to graduate programs
  • Topics covered include writing a personal statement, school selection, secondary applications, letters of recommendation and interviews
  • Editing services provided for personal statements and experiences 

Gap Year Information


Interview Preparation

  • Mock interviews offered in partnership with the Speech and Presentation Center 

Early Acceptance Program with Rocky Vista College of Osteopathic Medicine

  • Direct partnership with RVUCOM allowing pre-medical students with high credentials to apply early for acceptance to this specific medical school
