Growing up in San Diego, California, Michelle Gray has always loved the ocean. Since coming to Southern Utah University, the senior studio arts major with an emphasis in photography, has started to blend her major with her passion for all things H2O related.

Michelle recently produced her first underwater photoshoot. She said her reason for doing the project was to explore her relationship with water and her reactions to it.

“A lot of it was about learning the technical skill required to take photos underwater,” said Michelle. “I drove up to Sand Hollow and created all the pieces there. I came away with three awesome underwater photographs.”

Michelle originally wanted to hold off on underwater work until after she graduated, but later decided it was a possibility while still in school. Michelle has been blown away by her creative process.

“I have made huge strides since the completion of this project and I am excited to explore more,” said Michelle.

Michelle gave credit to SUU for creating an avenue for her to pursue her dreams. Professor Sam Davis was instrumental in her project. When first obtaining her degree, she was hesitant to invest in an underwater camera, but Professor Davis gave her the push she needed take the plunge. She said without his help, her underwater series would not have been created.

“SUU has given me the opportunity to enhance my understanding of art and photography,” said Michelle. “The school has provided the vehicle to create and achieve my goals, and, in turn, I have taken the wheel. “

Michelle’s ultimate dream is to shoot for an ocean conservation foundation; be a freelance photographer for National Geographic, a travel magazine, or a diving magazine; or travel wherever and take whatever photos she wants in those moments.

“I just want to see things, experience life, and create awesome art,” said Michelle.
