Sophomore communication major Baylee Terrones has used photography to create a picture perfect experience at Southern Utah University.
This year, Baylee’s passion for photography and sweet demeanor helped her win the title of Miss SUU. During the competition Baylee used photography as her talent, and created a video to showcase her love for storytelling through a camera lens. The judges were blown away by her skills and ability to turn her hobby into a business venture.
Baylee has been running her own photography business for about three and a half years, and strives to become better every day. This Cedar City native decided to grow her business skills at SUU due to her personal connection with the university.
“I love SUU because every member of my family has worked and/or graduated from here,” said Baylee. “It is truly a part of who I am.”
Baylee is a digital image and portrait photographer. She says taking pictures of people is her favorite thing to do.
“I have always been a people person and being able to capture a sense of who they are through a photo is very rewarding,” said Baylee. “Seeing someone's face light up and having fun with them is why I love what I do.”
Baylee’s passion for photography began when she was a senior in high school. Originally self taught, Baylee has grown over time with the support of her family and great mentors at SUU.
Now Baylee uses both a 50mm and a 35mm lens, learned to edit with Adobe Lightroom, had the opportunity to work with videography, and has also gotten to work with many wonderful people – not only at SUU – but across the state.
“SUU has helped me grow immensely in what I want to do with my life, and I can say that is from my teachers and advisors as well as fellow students,” said Baylee. “The support here is amazing, and professors are always willing to help me succeed.”
As of late, Baylee has been able to use her photography for SUU activities and to gain connections with fellow students. Because of her time on campus and her current position of Miss SUU, she has been able take various styles of photography, and grow her network in the southern Utah photography scene.
Baylee said the most wonderful part of being a photographer is the smile photos can put on people’s faces.
In the future, Baylee’s dream is to graduate from SUU with a strong understanding of how to run her own business, and she hopes to have the opportunity to take pictures around the world.
