The importance of cybersecurity is growing daily in our modern world. Cybersecurity Ventures predicts that cybercrime will cost $6 trillion annually worldwide by 2021. A Master of Science in Cyber Security and Information Assurance (MS-CSIA) will provide you with the knowledge you need to break into a competitive field and prepares you for an advanced career.
By completing the Master of Science in Cyber Security and Information Assurance (MS-CSIA) program at Southern Utah University, students gain a state-of-the-art education in the world of design, planning, and management of cyber systems, as well as the procedures for protecting cyber systems and infrastructure from external threats, including terrorism.
In SUU’s MS-CSIA program students complete 15 credit hours of core courses, 12 credit hours in an emphasis, and a 6 credit capstone, which can be either a capstone course, internship, thesis, or 2 additional classes. In the foundation courses, students will establish an understanding of the basics of network security, the common threats to it, IT project management, and research methods. Emphasis classes will focus on either Cyber & Web Security or GRC & IS Controls.
Emphasis in Cyber and Web Security
An emphasis in Cyber and Web Security is ideal for students with computing and coding experience. The program builds upon a foundation of coding skills to develop advanced techniques for providing cybersecurity systems for the many companies that need it. This emphasis aims to establish and strengthen high-level skills like cryptography, digital forensics, and security DevOps. Students with this emphasis intend to be highly involved in the development and implementation of the cybersecurity systems that they work within their professional careers.
Emphasis in Government, Regulation, and Compliance and IS Controls
An emphasis in Government, Regulation, and Compliance and IS Controls (GRC and IS Controls) does not require a background in coding and computing. This emphasis focuses on the legal side of cybersecurity. It is designed to familiarize students with cybersecurity laws and regulations they might need to know to work in government positions and as legal consultants. Students will learn about the nuts and bolts of things like the cybercrime investigation process, information systems auditing, and security frameworks.
The field of cybersecurity more often than not requires the advanced skills that are developed in a master’s program. The need for people in this field is growing rapidly with Cybersecurity Ventures predicting up to 3.5 million cybersecurity job openings by 2021. An MS-CSIA degree gives graduates the skills they need to succeed in the rapidly growing, high-demand field of cybersecurity.
