Summers at Southern Utah University are a whole new ball game. In addition to smaller class sizes and proximity to national parks during peak season, students that choose to take on-campus classes can experience summer-exclusive events such as the Utah Shakespeare Festival and the Utah Summer Games.
Annual Summer Events in Cedar City
Mini Breaks with the Community Engagement Center
The Community Engagement Center (CEC), SUU’s campus hub for student volunteers, will host Summer of Service events throughout the summer. These events include Mini-Breaks every other Saturday in which students will travel and serve on location, in addition to a new service event held every Wednesday.
Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games
The Opening Ceremony for the Larry H. Miller Utah Summer Games is a must if you are staying in Cedar City, or an area nearby, for the summer. Hosted in Cedar City since 1985, the opening ceremony includes food trucks, a flag ceremony for competitors, a headlining artist (past artists have included the Plain White T’s and the Boogie Knights), as well as a firework show. The 2021 opening ceremony will be held on Friday, June 18th.
Utah Shakespeare Festival
The Utah Shakespeare Festival is truly a staple of Cedar City, and a no-brainer for students staying over the summer. Students (SUU or otherwise) can purchase a Student Access Pass for $40 for an unlimited pass for the season- that’s right, you can attend as many performances as you’d like throughout the season!
Each evening the Utah Shakespeare Festival also hosts the free Greenshow. With songs, stories, dances, and audience participation, there is something to please every guest and remind you of what you love about the Festival.
Southern Utah Museum of Art
The Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA) is a campus staple that students can take advantage of year-round. However, summer students will have access to at least two summer-exclusive exhibits. Students can also join the SUMA Sidekicks program for free. SUMA Sidekicks is a punch card program where members can earn punches toward prizes such as stickers and pins.
Cedar City Festivals
Cedar City is also called Festival City, U.S.A., so there are always events going on between car shows, slow rolls, and other exciting community events. Events are kept up-to-date on the Visit Cedar City event calendar.
