At Southern Utah University, students come first. No matter their circumstances, SUU wants every student to have the chance to get a higher education. Through TRiO Student Support Services (SSS), 200 students per year receive help to overcome potential barriers to higher education and SUU is able to provide tools, services, emotional support, and other resources to help students as they pursue their educational goals.
TRiO Student Support Services Requirements
To be eligible for the SSS program, students must meet one or more of the following criteria:
- Be a First-Generation Student: TRiO SSS Director Chip Sharpe defines a first-generation student as, “someone whose mom, dad, or legal Guardian did not receive a Bachelor's Degree before the student’s 18th birthday. It is the degree that disqualifies them, not how much college was attended.”
- Students who qualify as low income: The term “low-income individual” means an individual whose family’s taxable income for the preceding year did not exceed 150 percent of the federal poverty level amount. TRiO Services Director Chip Sharpe says if a student qualifies for Pell Grant funds, they would qualify for the program.
- Disability: The student in question has a documented disability and has registered with SUU’s Disability Resource Center.
Other requirements include being a U.S. citizen, having enrolled at SUU, and having an academic need. After submitting a form, the TRiO Services staff will deem eligibility. An appointment with a TRiO Services staff member will be scheduled upon acceptance. The TRiO Services resources are granted to enrolled students for up to six years or completion of a bachelor’s degree.
TRiO Student Services
TRiO Services also provides tutoring for math, English, general science, and almost any general education course required for SUU students. All tutoring services are free to enrolled students.
Other services include academic advising, course selection, major/career assistance, financial assistance, mental and emotional support, and a computer lab.
SUU is proud to host three programs associated with TRiO; Upward Bound, Talent Search for high school students, and Student Support Services for students at the university level. These three programs have been crucial in past years in helping educationally or economically disadvantaged students gain higher education and promote learning every day, outside the classroom.
