How to Find an Internship for the Summer

Are you planning to take a well-deserved break from school life this summer, but would still like to make progress on your academic journey? An internship might be just what you are looking for. The summer semester is a golden time to gain hands-on experience, professional growth and invaluable networking opportunities through an internship. You will get to practice skills that are essential for your future career and explore different industries, roles and workplaces. Furthermore, the networks and connections you build during the internship can open doors to future job opportunities. Overall, doing summer internships can be a strategic investment for your future success and career development. Whether you choose to do it on or off campus, SUU has you covered!
Here are seven ways to help you find an ideal internship this summer:
T-Bird Campus Jobs
If you need to work on-campus, T-Bird Campus Jobs is the right place for you. You can use the search icon to specify the job type as “internship,” which will help you find paid internships that are on-campus. Remember to check the dates of the positions to make sure they are open during summer.
SUMA Internships
The SUMA Internship program provides selected SUU students with opportunities to work on mentored projects in one of the following museum disciplines: collections, researching, interpreting and executing exhibitions, and producing promotional materials with the museum marketing and public relations team.
Professional Internship Program
The Professional Internship Program offers an invaluable opportunity for students across various majors to secure paid internships conveniently located on campus. Partnering with on-campus employers, the Career Center ensures that these internships are both enriching and financially rewarding, with positions spanning one semester and requiring a commitment of 20 hours per week. Throughout the internship, students will undergo evaluations to track progress and identify areas for improvement, culminating in a comprehensive Career Ready Reflection.
Leavitt Center Internships
Leavitt Center helps place interns off campus such as in local offices, state offices, Washington DC offices, etc. There’s no major requirement, but be aware of the time for different positions. For the summer semester, Local and Federal internships are available. State internships, however, are typically only available for the spring semester. And internship employers/opportunities change each semester.
SUU Intergovernmental Internship Cooperative ( IIC)
If you are an outdoor person and don’t feel like working in the office, definitely check SUU IIC! The IIC offers numerous paid internships each season beginning in early May with some internships extending into fall and beyond. You will gain unique experiences in biology, accounting, wildlife, natural resources, maintenance, engineering, interpretation, recreation, administration and much more.
Job Hunting Websites
Handshake is a job-searching platform that utilizes the personal connections that SUU has made to improve the list of employers and events that appear. It’s completely free and is a great way for students to connect with potential employers off campus.
You can also look for internships through other platforms such as Indeed and USAJobs.
LinkedIn Jobs

Get Credit for Your Internship
Some degrees at SUU offer or require internships as part of their program. Talk to your academic advisor to see if that is the case for you. Also, discuss with your academic advisor the possibility of getting credit for your internship, putting you one step closer to graduating!
