Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business Admission Policy
Accounting, Finance, Management, and Marketing majors must be admitted into the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business before taking upper-division courses. Students may apply for admission after completing all pre- business foundation courses OR during the semester in which they will complete the pre-business foundation courses, which would normally be during the first or second semester of the sophomore year.
Standard Admission
The standard requirements for full admission to business programs in the Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business are the following:
- Complete all 5 pre-business foundation courses (see below) with a grade of C- or better in each course, with a combined GPA of 2.5 or higher in these courses.
- Complete at least 36 college credit hours with an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher.
Students meeting these requirements are assured admission to the School of Business.
Pre-Business Foundation Courses
- ACCT 2010 — Accounting Principles
- ECON 2010 — Principles of Microeconomics
- ECON 2500 — Quantitative Methods for Business & Economics
- IS 2410 — Spreadsheet Applications
- MATH 1040 — Statistics
Conditional Admission
Students who are in the process of completing the pre-business foundation courses may apply and be admitted conditionally if they meet the following requirements:
- Complete 3-4 of the pre-business courses with a grade of C- or better in each course
- Be enrolled in the remaining 1-2 pre-business courses
- Achieve a GPA of 2.5 or better in all pre-business courses
- Complete at least 24 college credit hours with an overall GPA of 2.5 or higher
Students meeting these requirements will be fully admitted when they successfully complete the remaining pre-business core courses, passing each with a grade of C- or better and maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 in the pre-business core courses.
Admission by Committee Review
Students who do not meet the requirements for standard or conditional admission may apply for admission by committee review if they meet the following requirements:
- Complete all 5 pre-business courses with a grade of C- or better in each course
- Complete at least 36 college credit hours with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher
- Submit a one-page essay describing why they want to major in business and why they believe they can be successful in their chosen major
The School of Business Admission Committee will evaluate applicants who meet these requirements and determine eligibility on a case-by-case basis.
