CAPS Internship Application Procedure
Application Materials
Applications to our internship program are submitted using the APPIC Application for Psychology Internship (AAPI) online, which you can access at the AAPI Online website. All of the application materials will be uploaded using the applicant portal on the APPIC website.
The electronic application includes:
- Completed AAPI
- Curriculum vitae
- Cover letter
- Three letters of recommendation, including at least two from clinical supervisors
- Graduate school transcripts
- [Optional] Recommended submission of a de-identified integrated assessment report.
Candidate Selection
The internship selection committee typically consists of 4-6 CAPS staff members and current interns. Each application is read and reviewed according to the following selection criteria:
- Therapy experience with a wide range of clients. Experience with young adults and adults in an outpatient setting (preferably a university counseling center) is highly valued.
- Assessment experience, preferably LD/ADHD assessment with adults.
- Strong letters of recommendation. Letters from clinical supervisors outside of the applicant's graduate program are preferred.
- Cover letter and essays that suggest interest in our internship program and an ability to both contribute to our center and learn from our staff.
- We also appreciate group therapy experience and experience providing supervision, as these are required elements of our internship program.
Interview Procedures
Because the APPIC Directory Online does not differentiate between the number of applications received in Phase I versus Phase II, we provide more specific summary below:
Applications by Phase | 2019-2020 | 2020-2021 | 2021-2022 | 2022-2023 | 2023-2024 |

For the 2024 APPIC Match, we plan to interview as many candidates during Phase I as are a good fit for our internship program. We have funding for 3 full time interns this year. If we go to Phase II, we plan to interview 6-10 applicants per available internship slot. For Phase I, applicants will be notified via email on December 13th about whether or not they are being invited to interview. Phase I interviews take place in early January. In Phase II, interviews take place in late February or early March. Interviews will be conducted over Zoom and consist of the following components: 50 minutes with Selection Committee Members, 10 minute break, 30 minutes with the Training Director. Interviewees are also invited to attend a drop-in Q&A Session with current interns and/or a Virtual Open House with all CAPS staff. The Training Director, current interns, and CAPS staff are happy to answer questions both before and after interviews so that you are able to make the most informed decision possible about whether our site is a good fit for you.
