Post-Bachelor Certificates
Southern Utah University’s Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) program offers post-bachelor certificates in Online Teaching, Leadership Studies, and Non-Profit Management. These concentrations focus on developing valuable and relevant skills sought by employers today. Our certificates were highlighted in this SUU News Story.
Certificates
According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) (2016), "More than 80 percent of responding employers said they look for evidence of leadership skills on [a] candidate's resume, and nearly as many seek out indications that the candidate is able to work in a team" (para. 4). The Leadership Studies Graduate Certificate can fulfill a student's leadership educational training. Through three separate courses, students will do the following:
- Analyze basic leadership approaches, processes, and traits
- Gain a foundational knowledge of leadership by identifying styles of leadership
- Delve into interpersonal aspects of leadership knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Apply their own individual expertise
- Understand how culture, ethics, and gender are related to leadership
- Build and lead effective groups and teams
- Create a continuous improvement plan
- Craft a leadership eportfolio (created over the three-course series)
The COVID-19 pandemic has forever altered education, making online teaching more relevant than ever. Even as the effects of the pandemic recede, the online teaching and learning environments will remain, having become enmeshed into education. Through the MIS Program's Online Teaching Graduate Certificate, and specifically through three courses, students will learn course design. By the end of the third course, they will have built a Canvas learning management system (LMS) course on a topic of their choice. Additionally, students will learn the following:
- How fundamentals of online teaching, learning, and design work together
- How theory and knowledge build upon practical experiences by studying in, and fulfilling assignments within, a learning management system (LMS)
- How to develop a course shell for an online course, including the most basic elements
- How to utilize the fundamentals of instructional design for online learning
- How theory, models, interviewing, and design tools are utilized to increase learner breadth and depth of understanding to develop quality online learning experiences
- How to utilize the fundamentals of effective online learning assessments
- How theory and tangible skills relate to assessment within online discussions, papers, projects, games, and more
- How to develop and practice skills within a learning management system
- How an online course is vetted through national industry standards such as Quality Matters
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects employment growth in the range of approximately 17% from 2019 to 2029 in the field of non-profit management (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2018). Studying non-profit management helps students to be competitive for jobs in this growing industry. The Non-Profit Management Certificate is designed to teach an introduction to the strategies, techniques and requirements for managing a non-profit organization. Through three courses, students will focus on applying strategies and tools within a non-profit organization to create a positive impact. Students will do the following:
- Understand how to effectively manage a non-profit organization
- Draft grant proposals in preparation for successfully securing funding from various agencies
- Apply critical and ethical skills to successfully fundraise efficiently and effectively
- Cultivate methods for soliciting and stewarding private funding for annual funds, major gifts, and planned gifts
- Develop strategies for the financial management of a non-profit organization
- Strategize to increase constituent and donor loyalty within non-profit organizations
