Submission Guidelines
Manuscripts should follow the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition. Manuscript submissions should generally be between 3000-7000 words in length. The deadline for submission for the annual issue is the second week of October. Rolling submissions are also accepted, but will not be considered until after the October deadline. JWO uses a blind peer review process. Make sure no personal identifying references appear on any page. Authors should include all of the following information on a separate page with their submission:
- Author’s name
- Manuscript title
- Mailing address
- Email address
- Daytime phone number
Submitted manuscripts are sent to at least two reviewers. Final publication decisions are made by the editor and the Editorial Board.
Submit electronic copies of manuscript and separate identifying information to: woodeno@suu.edu (Only .doc, .docx or .rtf files will be accepted.)
JWO Style Sheet
The Journal of the Wooden O follows the Chicago Manual of Style, 17th edition with JWO exceptions. All submissions should be double-spaced documents (.doc, .docx, .rtf). Submissions should be between 3,000-7,000 words in length. JWO uses endnotes rather than footnotes. All notes should be numbered using Arabic numerals. Other guidelines are as follows:
- For documentation of plays, use parenthetical, in-text citations that include act, scene and line numbers. For example, Romeo sighs: “beauty too rich for use, for earth too dear” (1.5.46). Do not list play citations on the Note page.
- After the first quotation of Shakespeare’s works, identify the edition being used in an endnote.
- Cite works by other authors in endnotes.
- Do not use Ibid on the Notes page. Instead, list author last name, a shortened title, and page number.
- Omit “p.” and “pp.” when citing page numbers.
- Separate lines of text within the body with forward slashes. Leave a space before and after each forward slash.
- When quoting four or more lines or more than one hundred words of text, use block quotations.
- Use double-quotation marks (“ ”), except when using quotes within quotes (‘ ’). Place commas and periods inside the quotation marks. Colons and semi-colons should be placed outside the concluding quotation marks.
- Spell out numbers between one and one hundred. Also spell out numbers that can be written as two words (e.g., fifty-five hundred).
- Retain original capitalization, spelling, and punctuation in titles and quotations from early modern sources.
