Department of Filmmaking, Art, and Design
Southern Utah University is an accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and offers intensive experiences in painting, drawing, printmaking, graphic design, illustration, ceramics, sculpture, photography, art education, and art history. Major in a creative visual art, get a Minor, take General Education classes, or, take courses for your own personal development. Our courses emphasize sound training in studio areas and understanding of art's past and present in order to build a solid foundation for individual expression.
We offer two types of degrees; one, a liberal arts degree that focuses on knowledge about art in the context of a broad course of general studies. It emphasizes the ability to articulate that knowledge through language, writing and hands on studio work and will include a minor of the student’s choosing. These courses of study lead to the Bachelor of Arts in Art History or the Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art degrees (BA). The second type of degree is a professional degree in a studio area. These courses of study lead to a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA) in Graphic Design, Art Education, or Studio Arts in one of four emphasis areas. The emphasis areas include Photography, Illustration, Painting/Drawing/Printmaking, and Ceramic/Sculpture. The BFA degrees prepare students for professional studio careers, teaching, and graduate studies in a studio discipline. Visit our Degree Programs page for more information.
