Military-Connected Student of the Month
Doug Dean - April 2022
Hometown: Fresno, CA
Branch of service and anything you’d like to share about your time in service: United States Marine Corps. I was a heavy equipment Operator with 8th ESB, was able to work a joint task force in Rio Grande Valley, TX building operable roads for border patrol. After two years of operating, I became a Civil Affairs NCO, and deployed with 2nd Battalion 8th Marines to Romania on a Black Sea Rotation.
Hobbies: In my free time I enjoy anything outdoors. I will either be camping, hiking, trail running, dirt bike riding, or snowboarding in the winter. I just began canyoneering and attempting to rock climb. If i’m not outside, I'm just hanging out with my new puppy Rip.
Date attendance began at SUU: I began at SUU May of 2020.
What are you studying and why: I am currently studying Psychology. I want to eventually become a recreational therapist/counselor for veterans and first responders. From first hand experience serving and having lots of family in law enforcement, I have seen first hand the difficulties faced, and the limited amount of resources available to help those serving, so I hope to bring an alternative avenue of care.
Plans after college: Once finished with my bachelors degree, I will pursue a graduate degree in recreational therapy. And in my dream position I will start an adventure wellness camp.
Community service/programs: I volunteer at a few animal shelters/rescues. When possible I will be a part of Soul Dog animal rescue, and Best Friends Animal Sanctuary.
Any awards at school: N/A
Any advice for future students: Work hard and stay humble, you aren’t owed anything, and your actions will always speak louder than words. Make sure to take time for yourself. It is very easy to get sucked into the craziness of navigating school and the current world and lose your way, so take that break, get outside and do something cool or new.
