Voices of the Ancients Overview

Virgil Johnson Teaching

The institute will model an authentic archaeological investigation of the Fremont culture using classroom-ready curricular materials, first-hand experiences with significant landmarks, direct connections with descendant community members, and oral history. Teachers will leave the institute armed with the tools and materials to replicate inquiry-based learning with their students, which dives deep into authentic content and illuminates a little-known part of American history.

Sessions

Session I: Sunday, June 22 -Friday, June 27, 2025
Session II: Sunday, July 13 - Friday, July 18, 2025

  • Please know that this is only the tentative schedule. Due to lessons learned from the pandemic and the usual host of uncertainties, these plans could change considerably at any time. Stay tuned for more detailed updates.

Curriculum Guides

(Curriculum guides are provided to each participant)

Assignments

After experiencing each lesson from Project Archaeology: Investigating Shelter and Investigating Rock Art as a learner, participants will reflect on how they would implement each lesson in their classroom. On the final day, participants will have time to simulate all of their reflections and create a curriculum implementation plan for their situation.

For those interested in receiving college credit for the workshop, an additional 3-5 page reflection paper will be due by July 31.

Graduate Credit

The Voices of the Ancients Institute agenda includes 45 contact hours which makes it eligible for three graduate credits at $23 per credit. The total credit cost is $69 for the course. This may not be applicable for all, but it is available. More information will be provided. All participants will receive a certificate of completion for the 45 professional development contact hours.
