Graduate Writing Center Terms of Service

By booking an appointment with the GWC, I understand and agree to the following:

  • I must provide my correct contact information to receive appointment confirmations and reminders, to receive feedback for Written Feedback sessions, and to receive any GWC communications about my appointments.
  • I may make up to two 45-minute sessions or one 90-minute session per week for up to 1.5 hours of appointment time, except during busy weeks when I may be limited to one session. (If I continue to overbook after a second reminder of this policy, I may be blocked from making appointments for the remainder of the semester.)
  • I can expect my appointment to be cancelled if I am more than 10 minutes late, do not respond to attempts to contact me, or do not share my paper in time (for a Written Feedback session).
  • If I miss three appointments, I can expect to be blocked from making appointments for the remainder of the semester.
  • I can meet with consultants and receive responses to any follow-up questions during their scheduled hours only.
  • I cannot meet with the GWC for help with any test, essay exam, assessment, or any assignment for which the professor has instructed me not to use outside help.
  • I need to be prepared to discuss my writing, my goals, and my specific questions.
  • I need to be present for my live online sessions and actively participate in them. If I can't be present for the duration of my live online session, I will either reschedule the appointment for a more convenient time or book a Written Feedback session instead.
  • I can expect the consultant to ask me questions about the project and my writing in order to give me better feedback and help me become a better writer.
  • I can expect that the consultant’s feedback may address whether my writing meets the assignment description/grading criteria or expectations for this genre.
  • I understand that the consultant can only cover so much in one session, so I may need to make follow-up appointments for feedback on my whole paper or project.
  • The writing I share must be my own work, and consultants can meet with me only about my own work. 
  • As the writer, I am responsible for making decisions about my writing (including whether to accept the consultant’s feedback) and for making all revisions and edits. I understand that the GWC is not responsible for my writing decisions and will not write, edit, or proofread my paper for me.
