Southern Utah Museum of Art

Welcome to SUMA

The Southern Utah Museum of Art (SUMA), part of the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Center for the Arts (The Beverley) on the campus of Southern Utah University (SUU) in Cedar City, UT, will open the summer of 2016.

This state-of-the-art museum will be home to approximately 5,300 square feet of exhibition space composed of several individual galleries. These galleries will host exhibitions from around the world, be home to a special collection of the work by Utah artist, Jim Jones, and feature rotating exhibits from the permanent collections. SUMA will also regularly exhibit work of Southern Utah University’s Art and Design students and faculty, and provide a venue for displaying regional artists and juried shows.

Approximately 5,300 square feet of the museum building will be dedicated to collection storage, care, and research. The building design will allow visitors to witness the behind the scenes operations of the Museum’s collection in the Trismen Mason Collection and Conservation Studio. Another 1,000 square feet will provide classroom and studio space for hands-on educational activities for K-12 school groups emphasizing the current exhibitions in the Beverley Taylor Sorenson Education Suite.

Through engaging exhibits and ongoing educational programming, SUMA will be a significant cultural resource for the people of Utah and the many visitors to our area. The opening exhibit will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the National Parks, featuring the archeology, history, and art of our region.

The Friends of SUMA are planning a “First Peek” event on June 25, 2016, to thank contributing artists and donors who have made SUMA possible. More information will be available in the spring. Tickets go on sale in early May.

The grand opening for The Beverley, a celebration which will encompass both SUMA and the Utah Shakespeare Festival’s two new theatres and facilities, will be July 7.
