Southern Utah University’s School of Business offers opportunities for management-minded students interested in careers with a financial focus. Students can choose from a variety of majors including management, accounting, business education, economics, hospitality management, finance and marketing.
SUU’s highly acclaimed management bachelor’s degree program is accredited by AACSB, the foremost international accrediting organization for business programs. Students majoring in management have access to a dedicated career coach that helps locate and arrange internships, as well as possible careers after graduation. Students are placed in small classes that allow for personalized education from their professors.
For students interested in accounting, SUU offers an AACSB-accredited accounting bachelor’s degree program. Nearly 100 percent of the school’s accounting graduates are employed after graduation, with many students landing a job before they officially graduate.
Sara Fallentine, an accounting major from Wellsville, Utah, offers a few easy steps for those preparing to become accounting majors.
“Study daily, develop critical thinking skills, take in-person classes, and keep a balanced schedule,” said Fallentine.
The business education bachelor’s degree program has a long, rich history at SUU. Designed for students with a desire to teach business at the secondary education level, the program focuses on three areas: business, computer information technology, and education.
If economics sounds enticing, the program provides high quality educational opportunities and excellent preparation for professional careers or graduate school. Undergraduate students regularly engage in research projects and individualized learning activities with faculty.
An economics major from Parowan, Utah, Miranda Jones gives students an inside look at what it takes to be an economics major.
“There will be a few hours of homework each day, especially once you get into your upper division classes,” said Jones. “But the hands-on experience I’ve received in the classroom cannot be replicated anywhere else.” 2017-2-VITA-story.jpg
Students looking to work around the world may find that the hotel, resort, and hospitality management bachelor degree program is a perfect fit. The undergraduate program is designed to provide students with strong training in business, management, customer service, financial services, leadership, and event planning. Students have a chance to participate in research, gain hospitality-related work experience, and network with alumni working in the hospitality management field.
Taylor Shepherd, from Salina, Utah, was able to find his passion for hospitality and international relations while at SUU.
“Classes in the hotel, resort, and hospitality management program allowed me to recognize my leadership style and taught me how to work effectively with others,” said Shepherd. “The program opened my eyes to international opportunities with my degree that I had not thought of before.”
Highly effective teaching, focused on student learning, is the hallmark of the finance program. The faculty make meaningful intellectual contributions by conducting and disseminating the results of research and related scholarly activities. Students are able to learn from professionals who provide service to both the university and society.
The marketing program at SUU is an AACSB-accredited program that helps students develop, implement, and control marketing strategies and tactics. Being a marketing major is combining both creative and analytical methodologies.
Tyler Cornia, a marketing major from South Jordan, Utah, describes why being a marketing major is a good choice.
“Classroom projects simulate real-world jobs,” said Cornia. “There are plenty of on-campus jobs and local internships that relate to the major, and there are many industry sectors and opportunities to choose from.”
From economics to management, SUU’s School of Business has opportunities for all students. The program works to combine classroom lessons with real-world experience to provide a quality education.
