Many Paths Forward for Art History Majors
SUU's Art History majors and minors have found many successful positions directly related to the visual arts and within the state and region's broader cultural life. Graduates of the Art History program have also gone on to join related graduate programs in Arizona, California, Ohio, Washington, D.C., and New York; and have undertaken continuing graduate-level studies in art history in Paris, France, Seoul, Korea; and Edinburgh, Scotland.
Hands-On Learning Opportunities
To prepare well-rounded students, Art History majors must also study a foreign language for four terms. They gain practical experience through annual trips to Los Angeles, visiting museums, galleries, and studios. SUU's Southern Utah Museum of Art offers exclusive collections and professional collaboration, showing students how art impacts society firsthand. Art History students also benefit from internships, Study Abroad programs, and top graduate schools worldwide, including locations like Paris, South Korea, and Scotland.
Learning From Experts
Our faculty are experts who help students understand how art shapes society. They write about topics like forgotten women artists, theories of modern art, and the challenges of uncovering overlooked art history. Students study different art periods and cultures such as 19th and 20th century art, American art, and contemporary art, along with European history. In the Art Insights course, students learn from professionals like curators and artists through discussions and hands-on activities.
Teaching License Option
To qualify for a teaching license, students must take professional education courses through SUU's Department of Teacher Education. Please see the degree requirements for Secondary Education Licensure.
