The spectacular scenery and location drew Jeffrey Goulding to Southern Utah University. It was a natural fit.

During his time at SUU, Goulding worked on several research projects and was an active member in Psi Chi, the psychology honors society. He had wonderful faculty mentors who made psychology accessible and attainable.

In addition to his studies, Goulding worked full time. “Balancing my schedule was very hard especially when my work involved graveyard shifts,” he said. “It took me an extra semester to graduate, but it was worth it. I learned that I can do hard things and the professors are there to support you and help you finish.”

Goulding now works as a post-doctoral fellow on the PTSD Clinical Team at the Albany Stratton VA in Albany, New York. He works closely with an interdisciplinary team to assess and treat veterans who suffer from PTSD, using evidenced based practices to help them cope with post-traumatic stress and reclaim their lives after a traumatic event(s).

The best part of Goulding’s job is the people. “Working with veterans and other psychologists to figure out the unique perspectives and struggles of each individual is a worthwhile challenge,” he said. “Seeing them change and better cope with their post traumatic stress is incredibly rewarding.”

Goulding said that SUU did a great job in preparing him for graduate study. “I had a well rounded experience in the field of psychology and had a good idea of what I was up against if I wanted to move on in the field,” he said. “I knew a little about a lot of things and that is what you need when you study psychology at a graduate level.”

“At SUU, you are not just another student. The professors know you and care about your future.”
